Description

This antibody reagent from STEMCELL Technologies targets human CD68 and features the Y1/82A clone. According to the product literature, the Y1/82A antibody is reported to be more specific for monocytes and macrophages than the KP1 clone, and recognizes an epitope distinct from those recognized by clones Y2/131, EBM11, Ki-M6, and KP1.

CD68 is described as an approximately 110 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the sialomucin, LAMP, and scavenger receptor families (Gene ID 968). Its heavily glycosylated extracellular domain contains a proline-rich spacer region separating mucin and LAMP domains, and has been reported to bind low-density lipoprotein as well as certain lectins and selectins, although the precise function of CD68 remains unclear. CD68 is highly expressed in lysosomes, endosomes, and cytoplasmic granules, and more weakly on the surface of macrophages, monocytes, neutrophils, basophils, dendritic cells, and NK cells. It has also been detected in the cytoplasm of γ/δ T cells, LAK cells, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, subsets of B cells, and hematopoietic progenitors, as well as in non-hematopoietic tissues including liver and kidney.

The reagent is a mouse monoclonal antibody (clone Y1/82A) of isotype IgG2b, kappa, conjugated to PE. According to the manufacturer's safety documentation, it is supplied as a clear liquid, is stable under normal conditions, and is not classified as hazardous under the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. The product is identified as a laboratory reagent intended for research use only, and is not intended for human or animal diagnostic or therapeutic uses unless otherwise stated. Listed applications include flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, immunoprecipitation, and Western blot.
