This mouse monoclonal IgG1, kappa antibody from STEMCELL Technologies, Clone HIT2, targets CD38, an ~45 kDa type II transmembrane glycoprotein expressed by many cell types, especially leukocytes. According to the manufacturer, the molecule functions as an ectoenzyme (ADP-ribosyl hydrolase) with cyclase and hydrolase activities, mediating lymphocyte activation, adhesion, and metabolism, with CD31 identified as a known ligand.

In humans, CD38 is expressed by the majority of hematopoietic cells, with levels varying according to differentiation and activation status. It is highly expressed on activated T and B cells and plasma cells, and is also found at high levels in several tissues, including brain, kidney, liver, ovary, pancreas, placenta, testis, and some types of cancerous tissue. The antibody is reported to react with human, chimpanzee, and horse.
