About Sudan I Detection

Sudan I is a synthetic azo dye historically used as a food colorant but classified as a potential carcinogen and banned as a food additive in many regions. Regulatory agencies require sensitive screening of food products to verify the absence of this illegal dye.

This competitive ELISA kit from Assay Genie is intended for in vitro detection of Sudan I residues across multiple food matrices including tomato juice, ketchup, chilli sauce, feed, and eggs. The competitive ELISA format is well suited for small molecule analytes that cannot be captured in a sandwich configuration.

Assay Workflow

The kit includes a pre-coated microplate ready for sample addition. Standards and prepared food extracts are added together with the antibody conjugate, and colorimetric readout is measured with a standard microplate reader. With a typical assay sensitivity of 0.1 ppb and a working range of 0.1 ppb to 8.1 ppb, results are interpreted against the standard curve generated in each run, allowing laboratories to quantify Sudan I contamination in routine food safety workflows.

Typical Applications

  • Screening of imported and domestic chilli-based products
  • Verification of compliance in tomato sauce and ketchup production
  • Monitoring of feed ingredients for cross-contamination
  • Quality control of egg and egg-product supply chains

Store kit components refrigerated at the temperature indicated in the manual to preserve activity through the stated shelf life.
