Automated imaging workstation from STEMCELL Technologies for high-throughput enumeration of hematopoietic colonies in methylcellulose-based CFU assays. The unit replaces manual scoring under a microscope with a standardized dark-field optical capture of 35 mm culture dishes, generating reproducible counts of burst-forming unit-erythroid (BFU-E), colony-forming unit-granulocyte/macrophage (CFU-GM), and multilineage CFU-GEMM colonies. Each scan is matched to a pre-calibrated classification algorithm, allowing laboratories to standardize hematopoietic progenitor quantification across operators and sites.

Bundled with a one-year entitlement to four Analysis Packs, the system supports routine characterization of cord blood, mobilized peripheral blood, and bone marrow samples cultured in MethoCult medium. The typical workflow dispenses 1.1 mL of methylcellulose suspension per 35 mm dish, incubates the cultures, and then loads the dishes into the reader for unattended image acquisition. Generated reports include total colony counts, a lineage breakdown, and stored images retained for audit and re-scoring. The platform is used in research applications including drug screening, genotoxicity assessment, and studies of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell biology.
