This fixable far-red fluorescent dye from STEMCELL Technologies stains mitochondria in proliferating and non-proliferating cells, supporting quantification of mitochondrial activity, localization, and abundance. The hydrophobic reagent easily crosses the membrane of live cells and accumulates in mitochondria in a manner partially dependent on mitochondrial membrane potential. Upon depolarization, the dye relocalizes to the cytoplasm and becomes non-specific while retaining its far-red fluorescence.

A thiol chloromethyl cell-retaining group increases staining efficiency by maintaining fluorescence long after fixation. The product is supplied as a red liquid and is suitable for fluorescence microscopy and microplate assays.

Reported optical and physical properties include a molecular weight of ~700 g/mol, an excitation wavelength of 640 nm, and an emission wavelength of 659 nm. The dye should be stored at -20 °C, protected from prolonged exposure to light, and remains stable until the expiry date indicated on the label.
