Hausser Hemocytometer with Cover Glass

A precision counting chamber supplied with a cover glass, this hemocytometer is manufactured by Hausser Scientific and distributed by STEMCELL Technologies for cell counting applications. The ruling pattern is Improved Neubauer, 1/400 square mm, with rulings covering 9 square millimeters. The boundary lines of the Neubauer ruling are the center lines of the groups of three, and the central square millimeter is divided into 25 groups of 16 small squares, each group separated by triple lines whose middle line serves as the boundary.

The ruled surface sits 0.100 mm (± 2%) below the cover glass, giving a chamber volume of 0.1 microliter. The volume over each of the 16 small squares is 0.00025 cubic mm. To determine the number of cells per cubic millimeter, multiply the number of cells counted per square millimeter by the dilution factor (if used) and then by 10, since one microliter equals one cubic millimeter.

After completing the count, the cover glass should be removed and the counting chamber cleaned with water or a mild cleaning solution such as a 10% bleach solution, then dried with a non-abrasive wipe.
