TIMP-4 is one of four endogenous TIMP family members (TIMP-1 through TIMP-4) that regulate matrix metalloproteinase activity, connective tissue homeostasis, cell migration, and apoptosis. In rat models, altered TIMP-4 expression has been associated with myocardial injury, vascular pathology, and fibrotic responses, supporting applications in cardiovascular research, toxicology screening, and investigations of extracellular matrix biology.

The protocol works with multiple rat-derived liquid sample types, including clotted-blood fractions and anticoagulated whole-blood preparations. Reconstituted standards should be aliquoted to limit repeated freeze-thaw exposure; store the sealed kit refrigerated until first use. Working solutions, particularly those containing antibody components, should be protected from light during incubations to preserve reagent activity.
