Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder driven by biallelic loss-of-function of the SMN1 gene, is a focus of intensive preclinical research in rat models of disease. For laboratories quantifying Survival of Motor Neuron 1, Telomeric protein across rat-derived research samples, Assay Genie provides a 96-test in vitro immunoassay configured around a matched-antibody architecture.

SMN1 resides on chromosome 5q13.2 and encodes the survival motor neuron protein, a ubiquitously expressed assembly factor for small nuclear ribonucleoproteins. The telomeric copy produces the majority of full-length functional SMN protein, distinguishing it from the paralog SMN2, whose alternative splicing limits functional output. Investigators working on SMA pathogenesis, motor neuron biology, candidate therapeutics, and preclinical evaluation use this kit to quantify SMN protein levels in serum specimens, plasma specimens, and tissue-derived preparations from experimental animals.

A capture antibody specific to rat SMN is paired with a conjugated detection reagent, and the resulting chromogenic signal is read on a standard microplate reader. Each kit supplies pre-coated wells, calibrators, detection antibody, wash buffer, and substrate in a configuration sufficient for 96 individual determinations. Kit components are intended for research use only and are not cleared for diagnostic procedures. Reagents require refrigerated storage and should be protected from light; reconstituted materials should be aliquoted to limit repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
