IRF4 is a lymphoid-restricted transcription factor of the interferon regulatory factor family, best known for directing the differentiation of B and T lymphocytes and for its role in germinal centre formation, antibody class-switch recombination, and cytokine-driven T helper subset specification. Aberrant IRF4 expression has been implicated in multiple myeloma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and adult T-cell leukaemia, making quantitative measurement valuable in immunology and oncology research.
