HEXb forms the beta subunit of the lysosomal hexosaminidase enzyme complex, which hydrolyzes GM2 ganglioside and related N-acetylglucosamine conjugates. Mutations in HEXB are associated with Sandhoff disease, making this protein a key marker in studies of ganglioside metabolism, neuronal lipid homeostasis, and lysosomal dysfunction in rat disease models.
