Hepcidin-25 is a 25-amino acid cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide hormone secreted primarily by hepatocytes in response to iron loading and inflammation. It serves as the master regulator of systemic iron homeostasis by binding the iron export channel ferroportin on enterocytes and macrophages, triggering its ubiquitination and degradation, which in turn reduces dietary iron absorption and traps iron within storage cells.
