An enzyme of central importance in lipid biosynthesis, Fatty Acid Desaturase 2 (FADS2) introduces a double bond at the delta-6 position of linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids, channeling these essential fatty acids toward gamma-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, and ultimately the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid pool that includes arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid. Because FADS2 protein abundance reflects the capacity of a tissue to generate these signaling and structural lipids, accurate measurement of the desaturase itself is a useful complement to direct fatty acid profiling.

The Assay Genie ELISA Kit for rat FADS2 enables quantitative detection of this desaturase across liquid samples and tissue homogenates obtained from rat models. The 96-assay format supplies sufficient reagents for medium-throughput comparison of FADS2 levels across treatment groups, genetic backgrounds, or developmental time points. Researchers working on PUFA homeostasis, hepatic lipid handling, eicosanoid-mediated inflammation, neural myelination, or maternal dietary programming can integrate the absorbance-based readout with standard microplate instrumentation.

Beyond steady-state quantification, the kit supports time-course and intervention studies where diets are supplemented with linoleic or alpha-linolenic acid, where desaturase inhibitors or inducers are administered, or where tissue-specific FADS2 expression is being mapped by qPCR or western blot alongside the ELISA. Storage of kit components at refrigerator temperature preserves activity through the recommended shelf life.
