COL1A2 encodes the pro-α2(I) chain that pairs with pro-α1(I) to form the type I procollagen heterotrimer, the dominant fibrillar collagen of bone, dermis, tendon, ligament, and dense connective tissue. Altered COL1A2 expression is widely studied in hepatic, pulmonary, cardiac, and dermal fibrosis models, as well as in osteogenesis imperfecta, scleroderma, and tumor stroma research.
