The assay is specific for natural and recombinant rat Calponin-1 and is suitable for use with serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell culture supernatants and other biological fluids.

Reported performance characteristics include a detection range of 0.312–20 ng/mL and a sensitivity of 0.162 ng/mL. Intra-assay CV is given as 5.8% and inter-assay CV as 8.0%. Reported recovery is 101% (95–107%) for serum and 103% (97–109%) for plasma, with linearity data provided for serum, EDTA plasma and heparin plasma across 1:2 to 1:16 dilutions.

Calponin-1 is a thin filament-associated protein implicated in the regulation and modulation of smooth muscle contraction, capable of binding actin, calmodulin, troponin C and tropomyosin; its interaction with actin inhibits actomyosin Mg-ATPase activity.
