ALAD catalyzes the condensation of two δ-aminolevulinic acid molecules into porphobilinogen, the second committed step of heme biosynthesis. As a cytosolic zinc-dependent enzyme, ALAD activity and expression are widely monitored in rodent toxicology models, most notably lead exposure studies where inhibition serves as a sensitive early biomarker, alongside research on acute intermittent porphyria, oxidative stress, and hepatic heme pathway regulation.
