The assay uses a colorimetric detection method and is specific for natural and recombinant mouse Wilms tumor protein homolog.

Performance specifications include a detection range of 78-5000pg/mL, a sensitivity of 39.6pg/mL, an intra-assay CV of 4.6% and an inter-assay CV of 6.9%. Linearity was validated in serum (88-97% at 1:2 to 107-117% at 1:16), EDTA plasma (93-102% at 1:2 to 94-106% at 1:16) and heparin plasma (118-118% at 1:2 to 102-112% at 1:16). Recovery averaged 83% (range 80-89%) for serum and 85% (range 80-91%) for plasma.

It has been described as having both tumor suppressor and oncogenic roles.
