SHBG functions as an androgen transport protein; each homodimer binds one molecule of steroid and is specific for 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone, testosterone, and 17-beta-estradiol. The protein has a molecular weight of 44 kDa and is secreted; in testis, it is synthesized by Sertoli cells and transported to the epididymis.

Performance specifications include a detection range of 78-5000 pg/mL and a sensitivity of 39.7 pg/mL, with intra-assay CV of 6.4% and inter-assay CV of 8.5%. Linearity in serum ranges from 99-108% at a 1:2 dilution to 107-118% at 1:16; EDTA plasma shows 94-104% to 108-118% and heparin plasma 96-105% to 109-118% across the same dilutions.
