E-selectin (also known as CD62E and ELAM-1) is transiently upregulated on activated vascular endothelium in response to inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha and IL-1, where it mediates the initial tethering and rolling of leukocytes from flowing blood. Measuring circulating or tissue SELE concentrations helps researchers investigate sepsis, atherosclerosis, ischemia-reperfusion injury, tumor metastasis, and chronic inflammatory disease progression.
