Mouse Presenilin 1 (PS1), encoded by the Psen1 gene, is the catalytic subunit of the gamma-secretase intramembrane protease complex. It performs the final cleavage of amyloid precursor protein that liberates amyloid-beta peptides, and dominant mutations in Psen1 are the most common cause of early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease.
