Stromelysin-1 (MMP-3) is a zinc-dependent matrix metalloproteinase that cleaves type II, IV, and IX collagens, proteoglycans, fibronectin, and laminin, contributing to extracellular matrix turnover in joint cartilage, tumor stroma, and inflamed tissues. Produced by synovial fibroblasts, chondrocytes, and macrophages, MMP-3 is widely studied as a biomarker of cartilage degradation in mouse models of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and as an indicator of metastatic potential in oncology research.
