Fumarate hydratase is a metabolic enzyme that participates in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, catalysing the conversion of (S)-malate into fumarate + H2O. It plays a crucial role in energy production and metabolism within mitochondria, and dysregulation of the enzyme has been linked to various disorders, including hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer. The protein functions as a homotetramer with a molecular weight of 50,053 Da (UniProt P97807).
