EGR1 is a C2H2-type zinc-finger transcription factor, also known as NGFI-A, Zif268 and Krox-24, that binds the DNA consensus sequence 5'-GCG(T/G)GGGCG-3' (EGR-site) and regulates the transcription of genes involved in cellular growth, differentiation and apoptosis. It localises to the nucleus and cytoplasm, and dysregulation of EGR1 has been linked to cancer, cardiovascular disorders and neurological conditions, making it a useful biomarker in disease research.
