Cystatin C is a low molecular weight (~13 kDa) cysteine protease inhibitor expressed constitutively by all nucleated cells and freely filtered by the glomerulus, making circulating concentrations a sensitive indicator of renal function in murine models.

Beyond nephrology research, it is increasingly used as a biomarker in studies of cardiovascular remodelling, neurodegeneration, and inflammatory disease, where mouse Cystatin C levels are correlated with amyloid deposition, vascular calcification, and tubular injury. From Assay Genie, the capture and detection antibodies are raised against the mouse protein and exhibit no significant cross-reactivity with homologous inhibitors such as cystatin A, cystatin B, or kininogen, supporting selective quantification in complex matrices.
