CKM is an important enzyme that plays a key role in energy metabolism, reversibly catalysing the transfer of phosphate between ATP and various phosphogens such as creatine phosphate. Creatine kinase isoenzymes play a central role in energy transduction in tissues with large, fluctuating energy demands, including skeletal muscle, heart, brain and spermatozoa. Monitoring CKM levels can offer insights into muscle damage, exercise physiology and potential muscle-related disorders.

The assay is reactive with mouse samples and accepts serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell culture supernates and other biological fluids. It detects natural and recombinant mouse Creatine kinase M-type, with a detection range of 0.312-20ng/mL and a sensitivity of 0.164ng/mL. Intra-assay CV is 4.2% and inter-assay CV is 6.7%. Linearity in serum (N=5) ranges from 94-103% at 1:2 to 80-90% at 1:16; EDTA plasma ranges from 98-109% at 1:2 to 81-94% at 1:16; heparin plasma ranges from 106-116% at 1:2 to 103-115% at 1:16. Recovery in serum averages 80% (range 80-85%) and in plasma averages 81% (range 80-87%).
