Prkab1 is the non-catalytic beta-1 subunit of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) complex, an energy-sensing kinase that plays a key role in regulating cellular energy homeostasis. In response to reduced intracellular ATP levels, AMPK activates energy-producing pathways and inhibits energy-consuming processes including protein, carbohydrate and lipid biosynthesis, as well as cell growth and proliferation. The beta non-catalytic subunit acts as a scaffold on which the AMPK heterotrimer assembles, bridging the alpha catalytic subunit (PRKAA1 or PRKAA2) and the gamma non-catalytic subunits.
