The Uroporphyrinogen Decarboxylase (UROD) enzyme catalyzes the fifth step of heme biosynthesis, converting uroporphyrinogen III to coproporphyrinogen III in the cytosol. Quantitative measurement of UROD protein levels supports investigation of porphyrin metabolism disorders, including porphyria cutanea tarda and the more severe hepatoerythropoietic porphyria, where reduced enzymatic activity drives photosensitivity and hepatic complications.
