Surfactant protein A (SP-A) is the most abundant protein component of pulmonary surfactant and a long-standing biomarker in respiratory disease research. The Assay Genie immunoassay enables quantitative measurement of human SP-A in lung lavage fluid, tissue homogenates, cell lysates, and cell culture supernatants using a colorimetric microplate format.

SP-A is synthesized and secreted primarily by alveolar type II cells and bronchiolar Clara cells, where it contributes to surfactant phospholipid organization, tubular myelin formation, and the innate immune defense of the lower respiratory tract. The protein also modulates alveolar macrophage function and inflammatory responses to inhaled pathogens. Quantifying SP-A in experimental samples supports research on neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, acute respiratory distress syndrome, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Supplied as a 96 assays kit intended for research use only, the assay is performed on a standard microplate reader. Each kit contains the components and protocol required to generate a standard curve and determine SP-A concentrations in human-derived specimens. Reagent storage conditions, recommended sample dilution ranges, and incubation times are detailed in the accompanying product insert.
