UBC9 (also known as UBE2I) is a key enzyme in the SUMOylation pathway, accepting SUMO1, SUMO2, SUMO3 and SUMO4 from the UBLE1A-UBLE1B E1 complex and catalyzing their covalent attachment to target proteins with the assistance of E3 ligases such as RANBP2, CBX4 and ZNF451. It plays roles in nuclear architecture, chromosome segregation and the sumoylation of substrates including p53/TP53.
