ST6GALNAC1 encodes alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminide alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 1, a type II transmembrane sialyltransferase anchored in the Golgi membrane that transfers sialic acid from CMP-Neu5Ac onto N-acetylgalactosamine residues of O-linked glycoproteins and glycolipids. The enzyme is also referenced by the alias SIAT7A and belongs to the ST6GalNAc family, which shapes terminal O-glycan structures recognized by siglecs, galectins, and selectins. Aberrant expression has been documented in prostate adenocarcinoma (notably affecting PSA sialylation), breast carcinoma, and colorectal tumors, making ST6GALNAC1 a target of interest in tumor glycomics and biomarker discovery.
