SPINK7 (Serine Peptidase Inhibitor Kazal Type 7), originally described as esophageal cancer-related gene 2 (ECRG2), is a secreted Kazal-family serine protease inhibitor that is highly expressed in mucosal epithelium of the upper digestive tract. Downregulation of SPINK7 has been documented in eosinophilic esophagitis and other chronic inflammatory conditions of the esophagus, where its loss contributes to epithelial barrier dysfunction and dysregulated type 2 cytokine signaling.
