SLC2A4 is an insulin-regulated facilitative glucose transporter that plays a key role in the removal of glucose from circulation. In the absence of insulin, the protein is retained intracellularly within storage compartments in muscle and fat cells; upon insulin stimulation, it translocates to the cell surface to transport glucose from the extracellular milieu into the cell. Dysregulation of SLC2A4 has been linked to diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, making it a relevant target for research.
