Smoothelin (SMTN) is a cytoskeletal protein that serves as a highly specific biomarker of terminally differentiated, contractile smooth muscle cells. The Assay Genie SMTN ELISA Kit supports research into vascular smooth muscle biology, where reduced smoothelin expression is associated with phenotypic modulation of smooth muscle cells during atherosclerosis, restenosis following vascular injury, and aneurysm formation. Two isoforms, smoothelin-A (predominantly expressed in visceral smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract and urinary bladder) and smoothelin-B (found in vascular smooth muscle), enable tissue-specific investigations of smooth muscle differentiation and de-differentiation. Compatible with tissue homogenates, cell lysates, and related biological samples, this microplate-based ELISA enables quantitative studies of smooth muscle maturation, vascular remodeling, bladder dysfunction, and gastrointestinal motility research, and complements orthogonal validation methods such as immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis.
