The SMC1A protein (Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes 1A) is a core component of the cohesin ring complex that holds sister chromatids together from S phase through mitotic segregation. It also operates in DNA double-strand break repair via the homologous recombination pathway, where ATM and ATR kinases phosphorylate it on conserved C-terminal residues. Research on SMC1A has been central to understanding Cornelia de Lange syndrome, where heterozygous loss-of-function mutations produce a multisystem developmental disorder. Altered SMC1A expression has been documented in colorectal, gastric, and hepatocellular carcinomas, where it correlates with aneuploidy and poor response to DNA-damaging chemotherapy, establishing its use as a candidate biomarker in translational oncology.

This quantitative ELISA from Assay Genie supports research use in chromosome biology, cohesinopathy mechanisms, and DNA damage response studies. The kit is supplied in a 96 Assays format and is reactive with human samples. Investigators working on patient-derived tumor material, cultured cell lines, or archived clinical specimens can apply it to monitor protein levels in vitro. Reagents should be refrigerated on arrival to preserve activity.
