SLC38A4 mediates sodium-dependent uptake of alanine, serine, proline, and glutamine, with prominent expression in placental trophoblast, liver, and skeletal muscle. The transporter contributes to maternal-fetal amino acid flux across the syncytiotrophoblast, and altered expression has been linked to intrauterine growth restriction, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and tumor amino acid metabolism.
