SLC11A2 is a multi-pass membrane transporter central to metal transport, particularly iron, and can also transport manganese, cobalt, cadmium, nickel, vanadium, and lead. It mediates apical iron uptake into duodenal enterocytes and iron transport from acidified endosomes into erythroid precursor cells. Defects are a cause of hypochromic microcytic anemia and are associated with progressive liver iron overload.
