The Assay Genie Human Retinoschisin (RS) ELISA Kit enables quantitative measurement of retinoschisin, a secreted discoidin-domain protein encoded by the RS1 gene. Retinoschisin is highly expressed in retinal photoreceptor and bipolar cells, where it maintains laminar architecture through homophilic cell adhesion. Loss-of-function mutations in RS1 cause X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS), the leading inherited cause of macular degeneration in young males, making accurate protein quantification valuable for ophthalmology research and disease modeling.

This microplate-format immunoassay is calibrated for use with tissue homogenates and cell lysates prepared from human retinal sources or relevant cell models. Researchers can apply the assay to study RS1 expression in XLRS patient-derived samples, in vitro retinal organoid cultures, and knockdown or overexpression experiments in photoreceptor cell lines. Components are stored at 4°C for short-term use, with frozen aliquots at -20°C available for long-term retention, and appropriate freeze-thaw handling preserves antibody activity.

Used as a research-use-only tool, the kit supports ELISA workflows in vision science, neuroscience, and rare retinal disease investigation, complementing downstream analyses such as western blot and immunohistochemistry of retinal sections.
