PRMT6 is a type I protein arginine methyltransferase that catalyzes the asymmetric dimethylation of arginine residues, most notably on histone H3 at R2 (H3R2me2a), and on non-histone substrates including transcription factors and ribosomal proteins. By depositing repressive H3R2me2a marks, PRMT6 influences transcriptional silencing, DNA damage signaling, and the activity of nuclear hormone receptors, and its dysregulation has been reported in breast, prostate, and lung cancer cell models as well as in HIV-1 replication biology.
