The NUP98-NUP96 precursor protein is encoded on chromosome 11p15 and undergoes autocatalytic cleavage to generate the NUP98 and NUP96 nucleoporins, components of the nuclear pore complex that mediate nucleocytoplasmic transport of mRNA and proteins. Chromosomal rearrangements involving the NUP98 locus are recurrent in acute myeloid leukemia and select myelodysplastic syndromes, supporting its use as a research biomarker in hematologic oncology studies.
