Functional Background

NEIL-3 (Nei Endonuclease VIII-Like 3) is a bifunctional DNA glycosylase that initiates base excision repair by excising oxidized bases such as 8-oxoguanine, thymine glycol, and 5-hydroxyuracil from damaged genomic DNA. The enzyme preferentially acts on lesions located within single-stranded regions and on G-quadruplex structures, and has been implicated in the repair of transcriptionally active loci. Quantification of NEIL-3 protein abundance in tissue homogenates and cell lysates is therefore relevant to studies of oxidative stress, genotoxic exposure, and tumor biology.
