This enzyme catalyzes the synthesis of diacylglycerol from monoacylglycerol and acyl-CoA and is most abundantly expressed in absorptive enterocytes of the small intestine, where it controls a major share of dietary fat uptake and packaging into chylomicrons.

Researchers apply this assay in studies of obesity, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, dyslipidemia, and intestinal absorption disorders.
