The assay is reactive with human samples, including serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell culture supernates, and other biological fluids, and uses a colorimetric detection method. The target is a secreted protein encoded by the TIMP4 gene (UniProt Q99727) that complexes with metalloproteinases such as collagenases and irreversibly inactivates them by binding to their catalytic zinc cofactor, with known activity on MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-7, and MMP-9.
