Meprin alpha (MEP1A) is a zinc-dependent, astacin-family metalloprotease that is tethered to the apical surface of epithelial cells in the kidney, intestine, and other mucosal tissues, where it cleaves extracellular matrix substrates, procollagen peptides, and inflammatory mediators such as IL-6 and IL-1β. Because of its central role in tissue remodeling and cytokine regulation, researchers employ this Assay Genie immunoassay to quantify MEP1A concentrations across cell culture supernatants and additional sample types for studies of acute kidney injury, renal interstitial fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and epithelial barrier dysfunction.
