A zinc-dependent endopeptidase in the matrix metalloproteinase family, MMP-7 (matrilysin or PUMP-1) is the smallest known member and plays a central role in extracellular matrix turnover. It cleaves a broad spectrum of matrix substrates including fibronectin, laminin, type IV collagen, gelatins, and casein, and also processes non-matrix targets such as pro-α-defensins, E-cadherin, Fas ligand, and TNF-α precursors.

This quantitative ELISA kit from Assay Genie is configured to measure human MMP-7 in diverse research specimens, supporting investigations into tumor invasion and metastasis, mucosal immunity, epithelial barrier biology, inflammatory bowel disease, wound healing, and pulmonary fibrosis research. The kit provides 96 assays per box along with the reagents and standards necessary to generate a standard curve and interpolate unknown sample concentrations by absorbance reading.

MMP-7 has attracted significant interest as a biomarker in oncology. Elevated MMP-7 levels have been reported in colorectal, gastric, pancreatic, esophageal, hepatocellular, breast, and non-small cell lung carcinomas, often correlating with tumor stage, lymph node involvement, and prognosis. In tumor tissue and circulation, MMP-7 expression has been linked to epithelial-mesenchymal transition and drug resistance mechanisms, making it a relevant target for both basic and translational research.

Beyond cancer, MMP-7 plays roles in innate immunity, where it activates antimicrobial peptides at mucosal surfaces, and in tissue remodeling after injury. Researchers studying cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and acute lung injury also commonly monitor MMP-7 as an indicator of epithelial damage and inflammatory activity.

Investigators should consult the product documentation for precise working dilutions, recommended sample preparation steps, and exact storage requirements needed to preserve antibody and standard performance across multiple uses of the kit.
