KDM5C catalyzes removal of methyl groups from histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4me2/me3), influencing chromatin remodeling and transcriptional repression at target gene promoters. Mutations in KDM5C are linked to Claes-Jensen syndrome, a form of X-linked intellectual disability, and altered KDM5C expression has been investigated in clear cell renal cell carcinoma and breast cancer contexts where the protein functions as a tumor suppressor.
