Integrin alpha-4 is a cell surface protein involved in cell adhesion and migration, recognised as a research target in fields including immunology, cancer, and inflammatory diseases. Functionally, integrins alpha-4/beta-1 (VLA-4) and alpha-4/beta-7 act as receptors for fibronectin, VCAM1, and MADCAM1, and ITGA4:ITGB1 also binds fractalkine (CX3CL1) and PLA2G2A. The protein (UniProt P13612) is a single-pass type I membrane protein.

The assay has a detection range of 0.156–10 ng/mL and a sensitivity of 0.078 ng/mL. Reported precision values are an intra-assay CV of 3.7% and an inter-assay CV of 8.9%. Linearity in serum is 85–95%, 105–114%, 89–99% and 99–109% at dilutions of 1:2, 1:4, 1:8 and 1:16 respectively; corresponding EDTA plasma values are 104–113%, 100–111%, 100–112% and 92–101%, and heparin plasma values are 108–118%, 80–90%, 87–96% and 91–100%.
