NANOG is a nuclear homeobox protein that acts as a transcription regulator in inner cell mass and embryonic stem (ES) cell proliferation and self-renewal, imposing pluripotency on ES cells and preventing their differentiation towards extraembryonic endoderm and trophectoderm lineages.
