Histidine ammonia-lyase catalyzes the non-oxidative deamination of L-histidine to trans-urocanate and ammonia, the first committed step in the histidine catabolism pathway. The enzyme is highly expressed in liver hepatocytes and in the epidermal layer of skin, where it contributes to amino acid homeostasis, keratinocyte differentiation, and the generation of urocanic acid for UV photoprotection.
