HEXIM1 (Hexamethylene bisacetamide-inducible protein 1), also referred to as HMX1, is a transcriptional regulator that sequesters the positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFb) within an inactive 7SK snRNA ribonucleoprotein complex. Investigators quantify HEXIM1 levels in studies of cardiac hypertrophy, estrogen-driven breast cancer proliferation, and HIV-1 transcriptional reactivation, where the viral Tat protein must displace HEXIM1 in order to recruit P-TEFb to the viral promoter.
