GALC is a lysosomal enzyme that hydrolyzes the galactose ester bonds of galactosylceramide, galactosylsphingosine, lactosylceramide, and monogalactosyldiglyceride, supporting the lysosomal catabolism of galactosylceramide, a major lipid in myelin, kidney, and epithelial cells of the small intestine and colon. Deficiencies in this enzyme are associated with Krabbe disease, an autosomal recessive leukodystrophy. The kit is therefore relevant to cardiovascular research and to studies of GALC biology and related disorders.

Reported performance characteristics include a detection range of 78-5000pg/mL, a sensitivity of 23pg/ml, an intra-assay CV of 6.1%, and an inter-assay CV of 8.9%. The kit is specific for natural and recombinant human Galactocerebrosidase (UniProt P54803), with the target protein localised to the lysosome.
