FABP8, also called myelin fatty acid-binding protein or peripheral myelin protein 2, is a small intracellular lipid carrier expressed in Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. It binds long-chain fatty acids and their CoA esters, supporting membrane lipid biosynthesis during myelin sheath formation. Altered FABP8 expression has been reported in patient samples and animal models of demyelinating neuropathy, making it a candidate biomarker for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and related peripheral nerve disorders. Assay Genie supplies the kit as a complete package including a pre-coated microplate, biotinylated detection antibody, streptavidin-HRP conjugate, calibration standards, wash buffer, substrate, and stop solution. The recommended protocol uses 50 uL of standard or undiluted sample per well, and reconstituted reagents should be aliquoted to preserve activity across multiple freeze-thaw cycles. The capture and detection antibody pair was raised against the human M-FABP sequence and shows no significant cross-reactivity with closely related fatty-acid-binding protein family members, supporting selective quantification of FABP8 in complex biological matrices. Researchers commonly pair this quantitative immunoassay with western blotting or qPCR for orthogonal validation of lipid-binding protein expression in neural tissue lysates. The kit is intended for research use only and is appropriate for longitudinal studies of peripheral nerve injury, regeneration, and inflammatory demyelination.
